The Outbound Index is an anti-spam tool that email administrators can configure and control, to:

  • Safely reject more spam during the SMTP conversation, based on facts about unauthorized outbound servers;

  • Protect more wanted mail from being mis-labeled as spam, using facts about server identifiability, stability, and longevity;

  • Monitor domains and networks for forgeries and unauthorized outbound activity, drilling down to catch the unauthorized users in the act;

  • Announce to the world that the organization behind these outbound servers and domains is identifiable and stable, by joining the Outbound Index community.

How you control and configure the Outbound Index

Using a web-based Dashboard, you control the ways you want to detect unauthorized email and separate out whitelistable mail, using a series of Checks and Actions you select. You also configure thresholds, scoring, and the actions you want taken in response to the pass and fail of each check.

The Checks and Actions determine how your queries to the Outbound Index are processed, and what results are returned to you. The queries are sent before you accept each incoming email. You can tweak your Checks and Actions to optimize the categorization of mail into three streams: Acceptable, Rejectable, and Unknown/Suspicious.

You can then subject the Unknown/Suspicious stream to further scrutiny using the anti-spam software you already have installed on your inbound server. Such further scrutiny may include content filtering/scoring, flagging as possible spam, challenge/response, etc.

Below is an example of configured checks and actions. Pass and fail "arguments" can include scores or custom response text, which may be optionally used in SMTP rejection notices, or inserted into headers to facilitate filtering or sorting.

The Outbound Index infrastructure supports full participation by the anti-spam community through discussion groups, an open development environment, and developer support. It was created and is maintained by Server Authority, Inc. We have been using the Outbound Index database and tools successfully on production servers since July 2003 in an 800-account ISP environment.
